Vitaly Scherbo Invitational Kicks Off West Coast Season

The 2010 Vitaly Scherbo Invitational was a great two-day event for men’s gymnastics last weekend in Las Vegas.  As expected, VSSG’s compulsory team swept nearly every age group in the individual AA competition.  In the level 7 group, future stars Nikita Bolotsky (age 9) and Carter Patterson (age 11) finished one-two in the 10-11 age group, scoring 89.65 and 88.50 respectively.  These two boys should dominate all season and will likely finish one-two at regionals (Region I).  Both will be level 9s next season.

Azarian’s Marty Strech easily ran away with the level 9 AA title garnering an 83.35.  The nation’s top level 10 club team, SCATS, swept both age groups.  Adrian de Los Angeles captured the 14-15 crown with an 84.10, while Michigan-bound Sam Mikulak took the 16-18 title with a blistering 89.80.  Mikulak won every event except for pommel horse, and smoked the field with a 16.60 on vault.  Teammates Jesse and Josh Glenn competed on four events and looked very strong.  Josh topped the field on pommel horse (14.15) and brother Jesse hit a beautiful high bar routine (15.15), finishing 2nd to Mikulak (15.25).

Kevin Wolting from Azarian captured the 2nd spot behind de Los Angeles with an 82.75, followed by San Mateo’s Andrew Botto (81.50).  SCATS’ Kanji Oyama (81.45) and Alex Powarzynski (80.20) finished out the top five.  For Powarzynski, a transfer from Black Hills (Lacey, WA), this was his inaugural meet for SCATS.  Xtreme’s Allan Bower, the 2009 JO National’s level 9 AA champion, also competed but only on five events.

VSSG is really developing a great pipeline of future optional gymnasts.  From levels 4 through 7 they are incredibly strong.  Nikita Bolotsky is following in the footsteps of such prodigies like Allan Bower, Sean Melton, Dominic Morris and Max Mayr.  Vitaly Scherbo and Compulsory Coach Radi Shopski are building quite a dynasty.
