Two Men’s Club Gymnasts Qualify for 2009 Winter Cup Finals

Posted on 06 February 2009 by admin

The first day of competition is over at the 2009 Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, NV.  The top 42 gymnasts have qualified for the finals, which will be held on Saturday, February 7.  Two club gymnasts placed in the top seven in the all-around competition.  Danell Leyva garnered an 87.30 to take 3rd place for the evening, and John Orozco came in at 85.55 to take 7th place.  Both clubbers easily qualified for Satuday’s finals.

2008 Men’s Olympic team bronze-medalist, Joey Hagerty, was the top all-arounder for the day (88.15), followed by Stanford’s Sho Nakamori (87.40).  The top 42 gymnasts were determined by a performance-based points system. Seven gymnasts will be chosen to the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team based on how they ultimately finish in the Winter Cup.  A total of 15 gymnasts will comprise the team until the 2009 VISAs in August.  Saturday’s finals will be intense.  Don’t be surprised to see many new faces on the Senior National Team.
