The 2021 Winter Cup wrapped up on Sunday with Event Finals. Gymnasts with the highest two-day scores on each event were able to lay claim to an apparatus title. Based on Day 1 results, there really weren't any surprises, but there were some great performances. Here are [...more]
Michigan's Cameron Bock and Stanford's Riley Loos traded turns atop the 2021 Winter Cup standings most of the way, but Bock came away with the title after his strong performance in the last rotation (SR). It was Bock's (84.15) first major all around title in the Senior ranks, and his first since winning multiple national titles as a Junior. He had a great, consistent meet, earning top-5 scores on five events. Loos (83.25) likewise was strong from start to finish, grabbing the highest scores on [...more]
Michigan (413.30) posted the season's fourth highest team score in their resounding defeat of Illinois (405.55) and host Nebraska (401.60). The Wolverines, for the moment at least, are firmly entrenched as the nation's number two squad behind Oklahoma. After only two meets, they have two of the top five recorded scores. It was their first meet since January 17, after being unceremoniously shut down a week later, undoubtedly an unnecessary travesty. [...more]
By now, most people in the gymnastics community know that Winter Cup 2020 ended up looking as much like the pilot of a reality TV show as it did a gymnastics competition. It drew attention to men’s gymnastics, but not the kind USAG wanted (or needed). The meet itself was great, but many fans, coaches, and athletes were not happy with [...more]
Based on Thursday's preliminary results, Sam Mikulak won his third Winter Cup AA title, outdistancing his nearest competitor by over two points. On Saturday, he added the PB title to his long resume. Sam Mikulak, showing the same amount of smooth, calm confidence as he did last summer at the U.S. Championships, won the 2020 Winter Cup all-around title by over 2 points. Mikulak (86.80) racked up the top scores on FX (14.60), PB (15.35) and HB (14.35) to keep his spot on the National Team. Sam Mikulak was the only automatic qualifier to the Senior National Team to compete AA in Sunday's Senior Event Finals. He improved over his Day 1 score by almost two points, winning two event titles (FX,HB) in the process. Joining him on the victory stand were Stephen Nedoroscik (PH), Trevor Howard (SR), Colin Van Wicklen (VT) and Adrian de los Angeles (PB). Two-time NCAA PH champ Nedoroscik scored two of the weekend's five scores of 15 or better. Howard dominated the rings, winning by almost 0.6, and also taking the 2nd position on VT. Van Wicklen had [...more]
Sam Mikulak put together two remarkably consistent days of gymnastics to earn his second Winter Cup AA title. Winning by almost six points, Mikulak had nearly identical scores (86.30/86.20) on both days. He won half of the event titles (FX,PB,HB) and was runner-up on PH. Saturday night's performance was almost like watching a replay of Thursday night's, right down to the [...more]
A familiar face in the Men's Gymnastics world is at the top of the leader board after Day 1 qualifying at Winter Cup. Sam Mikulak (86.30), despite a fall on his new triple back SR dismount and debuting a new but weaker Yurchenko 1 1/2 VT, simply ran away from his competition just like old times. Mikulak posted the top scores on FX (T1st-14.70), PB (15.20) and HB (14.70), and added a 3rd-place finish on PH (14.65) to distance himself by almost [...more]
