Stanford Men’s Gymnastics Turns Corner at 2009 Pacific Coast Classic

Posted on 23 February 2009 by admin

The Stanford Men’s Gymnastics Team broke their three-meet losing streak to Cal in convincing fashion at the 2009 Pacific Coast Classic. Stanford reversed their curse on pommel with four gymnasts logging scores of 14.0 or higher, led by Bryant Hadden’s 14.85.  This was easily their best pommel performance of the season.  Meanwhile, Cal’s Glen Ishino turned in the evening’s top pommel effort with an impressive 15.20.  Illinois’ Luke Stannard also swung a 15.20 to tie on the event, and Minnesota’s Kit Beikmann scored a nice 15.05.

Michigan’s newly minted U.S. Senior National Team member, Chris Cameron, won the evening’s all-around competition with a blistering 89.75.  While he was at it, Cameron provided a very entertaining flair-filled 14.95 pommel routine.  Ishino was close behind at 89.60, and teammate Kyle Bunthuwong took third with an 88.95.  Like Cameron, Bunthuwong’s performance also punctuated his recent selection to the U.S. Senior National Team.

Yet the Japanese collegiate all-star team won the team competition over 2nd-place Stanford and 3rd-place Cal.  Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Air Force rounded out the field.  Japan was most impressive on floor, vault and high bar.  They were absolutely explosive on vault, posting three scores of 16.0 or higher, led by Go Tagashira’s 16.55.

Stanford sealed their margin of victory over Cal with the evening’s highest scores on floor and rings, led by Josh Dixon’s 15.50 and Bryant Hadden’s 15.65 respectively.  Cal’s fate was doomed when all but one of their competitors (Ishino) suffered falls on parallel bars.  Stanford appears to be turning the corner, but anything can happen while Cal has two of the nation’s top all-arounders (Kyle Bunthuwong and Glen Ishino).

Notice that 3 of the top 6 all-arounders are freshmen:

  • Chris Cameron – Michigan – 89.75
  • Glen Ishino – Cal (freshman) – 89.60
  • Kyle Bunthuwong – Cal – 88.95
  • Yusuke Koga – Japan – 88.60
  • Tyler Mizoguchi – Illinois (freshman) – 84.75
  • Austin Phillips – Illinois (freshman) – 84.10

You’ll be able to watch the 2009 Pacific Coast Classic on Comcast Sports Net.  The broadcast date has not yet been announced, but StickItMedia will update when available.
