Random Thoughts on Men’s Gymnastics 09/01/09

We wish much luck to Stanford grad and ’08 Olympic Team alternate, David Durante, as he prepares to take time off from gymnastics to live in Europe. Durante’s friends and former teammates recently gathered at Stanford Coach Thom Glielmi’s house for a farewell bash. Read about it at Sho Nakamori’s blog.
International Gymnast has a nice article about ’09 U.S. World Team member Tim McNeill. After finishing a strong second place in the all-around at the U.S. Championships, McNeill has a legit shot to win a medal at next month’s world championships.
Universal Sports will be offering live webcasts and delayed same-day television coverage of the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships, which will be held October 13-18 in London. The men’s all-around finals will take place on October 15 and two days of men’s event finals will take place on October 17-18. The October 15 live webcast coverage commences at 1:30pm EDT and the two days of event finals will start at 8:00am EDT. No coverage will be offered for the October 13 qualifying round.
The 2009 World Championships will focus entirely on the individual gymnasts. In fact, there will be no team competition. The top 24 gymnasts from the qualifying round will advance to the all-around finals, and the top 8 gymnasts on each apparatus will advance to the event finals. This format will provide some good insight as to which newcomers just might make an impact in 2012.
Hey Coach Rick from Gymnastics Coaching, when are you coming back? We are assuming the Coach’s world tour will soon be coming to an end. Lately, he’s been hanging out in Scotland. No doubt his charges are anxiously awaiting his return to Canada. It’s been fun vacationing vicariously through his great blog/twitter/facebook updates. He had a great post the other day, displaying Charlie Tamayo’s world’s-best Yamawaki. We have to agree. In fact, if Charlie were to perform that stunt at the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium, his head would hit the scoreboard! Coach Rick… the hardest-working gymnastics blogger on the planet! Well, he might be tied for that honor with the sport’s most prolific videographer, Anne Phillips.

Thanks for the shout out !!
I have been enjoying the summer, over 2 months hiking the very best trails in Europe.
This all research for my hiking website and blog:

Just booked my flight to Barcelona. September is the very best month in the Pyrenees. And then on to the fantastic Picos de Europa on the North Coast of Spain.
… That takes me through to September 16th or so.
I’ll THINK about returning after that. Such is the life of the semi-retired gymnastics coach.
