Orozco Takes Silver on Rings at 2009 Junior Japan Competition

Posted on 23 September 2009 by admin

John Orozco added a silver medal on rings to go along with his all-around bronze at the 2009 Junior Japan International Competition.  Orozco had qualified on five events to advance to today’s event finals.  His 14.60 on rings wasn’t enough to overtake Japan’s Ryuzo Sejima (14.75).  Jake Dalton, also a qualifier on five events, failed to match his opening day score of 16.10 on vault and finished in 5th place with a 15.45.  Russia’s David Belyavskiy scored a 16.10 to take the gold.  Overall, the Japanese men won five out of six in the event finals.  It was a great meet for the Japanese as they dominated the two-day competition.

Still, the U.S. men did a great job.  This event gave valuable high-profile international experience to Orozco and Dalton, and they both proved they were up to the challenge.  In the short term at least, this meet was probably more important for Dalton, since he’ll be making his World Championships debut three weeks from now in London.  There he will only have to concentrate on vault.  Blythe Lawrence provides more in-depth coverage (including videos) of the Junior Japan International over at the Examiner.com.
