Michigan Men’s Gymnastics Signs Another Fab Five

Today, Michigan finally made a highly anticipated announcement. The Wolverines have pulled off one of the top 2010-2011 recruiting hauls in the country by signing SCATS’ Sam Mikulak and Jordan Gaarenstroom, Surgents Elite’s Alex Bubnov, All American’s Mike Myler and Josephson Academy’s Dylan James. The prize nugget, of course, is Mikulak.
A perennial Junior National Team member and consistent top five finisher at every single major competition, Mikulak will add yet another solid All American caliber all-around component to Michigan’s arsenal. Mikulak won the 2007 JO Nationals level 9 all-around title and finished runner-up to John Orozco at the 2009 JO Nationals and the 2008 and 2009 VISA Championships.
Gaarenstroom, Mikulak’s teammate at SCATS, was a member of the 2008 Junior National Team after his 9th and 11th place all-around finishes at JO Nationals and VISAs. His 2009 club season was cut short by injury, but he is now definitely on the rebound. Gaarenstroom is a strong all-arounder, and is also formidable on floor and rings.
Bubnov is another strong all-arounder and was the teammate of Penn State freshman Mackenzie Dow at Surgents Elite. He finished 17th AA at the 2009 VISAs. James and Myler are very strong on pommel horse, and have tremendous potential.
Nineteen years after Michigan’s original Fab Five freshmen basketball recruits spearheaded an historic advance to the Final Four, it will be fun to see if the gymnastics version of the Fab Five will help lead the Wolverines to a national championship in 2011. Head Coach Kurt Golder has landed a fabulous class of recruits.

Good question. Since this is the early signing period, we probably won’t know for several months. These are the top 3 so far.
