International Men’s Gymnastics Assignments Given to Top Juniors

According to Blythe Lawrence’s blog at Examiner.com, a lot of exciting Junior assignments have been doled out by USA Gymnastics. Jake Dalton and John Orozco will be competing at the Japan Junior International Competition in Yokohama September 20-25. Dalton is now a freshman at Oklahoma. In fact he went straight from Dallas to Norman, OK right after VISAs. Dalton is also reportedly first in line for David Sender’s spot on the World Team. Team USA will be well represented in Japan.
Sam Mikulak and C.J. Maestas will be headed for Brazil, as both were chosen to represent the U.S. at the PAGU Championships November 4-9. Two other gymnasts will be selected to the four-man team at the Junior Team camp in October. Those vying for the two spots are Jesse Glenn, Sean Melton and Jake Martin.
Maestas and Mikulak finished 21st and 22nd, respectively, in the Day 2 Senior Division competition at VISAs. Mikulak finished 2nd to John Orozco in the Day 1 Junior competition. Maestas won event championships on rings and parallel bars at the 2009 JO Nationals. Melton was the 2009 JO Nationals Level 9 all-around runner-up and won the all-around in 2008. Glenn and Martin placed 4th and 7th in the all-around (14-15), respectively at this year’s JOs. Glenn is also the Junior (14-15) U.S. vault champion. It’s nice to see all these athletes receive well-deserved international assignments.
