Posted on 08 March 2009 by admin

Daniel Ribeiro posted an NCAA season high score of 15.95 on pommel horse to lead the Illini to victory over UIC. Illinois had 5 gymnasts with scores of 14.00 or better on the apparatus, which enabled the Illini to compile the nation’s top team pommel horse score of 60.05.

The Illini also posted their season-high team score of 357.85.  The meet marked the return of Paul Ruggeri, who is still re-habbing from minor knee surgery (meniscus).  Ruggeri competed exhibition on his signature event (high bar), and tallied an impressive 15.70.

Illinois is starting to peak at the right time, as they also posted season-high scores on floor, vault and high bar.  Next weekend’s meet against Michigan should prove to be one of the most interesting dual meets of the season.  The Big 10 Championships take place April 3-4 in Ann Arbor.

HOLY COW! 15.95! thats amazing! I agree with you. I think that the dual meet will be a small preview of the big ten championships. I have thought all year that the Illini would be at the top but they never came through. Finally they scored the highest score in the big ten by far, 357.85! AND WITHOUT PAUL!

what a close meet the michigan illinois meet turned out to be! Looked like tight judging. Especially on Pommel unless there were big mistakes but in the end the Illini came out on top! Maybe making them the new favorite in the big ten.

Illinois came up big. Ruggeri is back and had a great meet, finishing 2nd in the AA. Ribeiro kept his streak alive with a nice pommel routine (15.3). The Illini had a great team effort on pommel and vault. They have to be the favorite to win the Big 10.
