Super Six Advance to 2009 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships

Posted on 16 April 2009 by admin

The Super Six for the 2009 NCAA Championships advanced as predicted.  The evening competition was exciting, with Oklahoma prevailing over Illinois and Ohio State. The most amazing performance of the night was by Illinois’ Daniel Ribeiro, who scored an outstanding 16.00 on pommel horse.  That’s easily the NCAA’s top pommel score of the season.  We’ll be scouring youtube to find that video!

*** UPDATE ***   CHECK OUT DANIEL RIBEIRO’S 16.00 POMMEL HORSE ROUTINE!

The Sooners really piled it on with their typically great performances on floor (62.05) and vault (64.25).  Steven Legendre easily ran away with both titles with scores of 15.90 and 16.35, respectively.  The Illini’s team pommel score was a staggering 59.95.

Illinois’ Paul Ruggeri posted a 90.45 to capture the evening’s top All-Around score, followed closely by Legendre’s 90.10.  Other impressive performances included Minnesota’s Russell Dabritz’ 14.90 on parallel bars, which tied him with Ruggeri and the Sooners’ Kyle McNamara.  Ruggeri also posted the evening’s top score on high bar (15.65), and Ohio State’s Brandon Wynn nailed a 15.75 on rings.

In the afternoon session, Stanford easily outlasted Michigan and Cal to make Friday night’s team finals. The Cardinal punched through impressive team scores on floor (61.00), rings (60.45) and vault (63.95), with Josh Dixon leading the way on floor (15.60) and vault (16.25).  Fellow teammate, Tim Gentry posted the afternoon’s highest score on rings (15.45), while Cal’s Glen Ishino topped the pommel horse field with a nice 15.30 and Kyson Bunthuwong captured the top score of 15.35 on parallel bars.  Michigan’s super-soph Thomas Kelley took the high bar with a 15.45.

Penn State’s 2009 Nissen-Emery Award winner, Casey Sandy, captured the All-Around with a 90.50, followed closely by Glen Ishino’s 90.15.  Ishino, a freshman, appears to be making good on the prediction made by many people that he would end up being one of the NCAA’s top 5 All-Arounders.

Here are the Super Six:

  1. Stanford – 361.10
  2. Oklahoma – 360.95
  3. Illinois – 359.30
