Busy Weekend for Men’s Club Gymnastics

Posted on 21 January 2009 by admin

The weekend of January 16-18 was the first big weekend of the 2009 season for men’s club gymnastics competition.  Three notable meets held were the Vitaly Scherbo Invitational in Las Vegas, Windy City Invite in Chicago and the West Point Open.

The Scherbo meet featured Junior National Team members Jake Dalton from Gymnastics Nevada, Jeff Langenstein from San Mateo and Jordan Gaarenstroom and Adrian De Los Angeles from SCATS.  Azarian’s Donathan Bailey and Sam Mikulak of SCATS, also national team members, scratched from the meet due to injuries.  Bailey has a minor wrist injury, while Mikulak is recovering from a fractured ankle.

Dalton won the meet handily with a nice all-around score of 85.25.  Second-place finisher Langenstein had the most impressive routine of the meet, when he snapped off a beautiful 16.1 double front on vault.  Azarian’s Marty Strech (age 11) made his level 9 debut a memorable one by winning with consistent across-the-board scores (81.55).  De Los Angeles won his level 10 (14-15) debut with an all-around score of 84.05.

Dalton recently signed with Oklahoma University, while Langenstein and Bailey will start competing for Cal next season.

Penn State freshman Miguel Pineda won the all-around (84.70) at the West Point Open.  World Cup’s John Orozco took second place (84.25), and Penn State-bound MacKenzie Dow from Surgent’s finished tied for seventh (80.75).

At the Windy City Invite, Orlando Metro’s Sean Melton captured the level 10 (14-15) all-around with a 82.40, and Great Northern’s Jesse Moravec won the level 10 (16-18) all-around (81.60).
