Big Week for Men’s Gymnastics
Posted on 12 April 2010 by admin
This past weekend was very busy for men’s club gymnastics. Every region held their championships except for Regions 1 and 8. Those regionals will be held this coming weekend. Here are the published results for the regions who have so far held their respective meets:
Gymnasts from Orlando Metro and Buffalo Grove so far have tallied the top all-around scores. After being out with an injury all last season, 2008 VISA top five all-arounder Jacoby Rubin has put up some really great numbers. Rubin will also be a top contender on vault, where he posted a 16.20 at the Region 5 meet. Teammates Jake Martin and Sean Melton have consistently delivered the top scores in the country this season in the 14-15 age division. Here are some of the top Level 10 regional all-around scores:
- Jake Martin (Orlando Metro) – 87.90
- Jacoby Rubin (Buffalo Grove) – 87.55
- Sean Melton (Orlando Metro) – 87.20
- Alex Strait (Champion Gym. Academy) – 87.00
- Wasef Burbar (Buffalo Grove) – 86.95
Region 7 will hold their regional meet this coming weekend at West Point, which is also the site of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Championships. Region 1 will hold their meet in San Diego (April 15-18). Scores for Region 1 will be posted live on MeetScoresOnline . For those unable to attend, all the Region 1 action will be webcast. Something unique to Region 1 is a second day of competition (event finals) for levels 8 through 10.
Gymnastics Examiner, Blythe Lawrence, pulled off a journalistic coup over the weekend with her complete coverage of the French International. Blythe got to see, in person, some great gymnastics. On the men’s side, Americans Jonathan Horton and Danell Leyva, added to their international resumes. Horton came away the more successful of the two as he captured bronze on high bar and shared silver with Japan’s Kohei Uchimura. Leyva didn’t fare as well as his highest finish was 10th on floor, but he certainly gained from yet another experience across the pond.
This week’s 2010 Men’s NCAA Championships are going to be an outright barnburner. The top three favorites going in are Stanford, Oklahoma and Illinois, but that doesn’t mean we can count out Michigan and Cal. Michigan boasts the NCAA’s top team score this season and Cal is showing serious signs of peaking at the right time. The all-around competition is completely up for grabs among these top contenders: Oklahoma’s Steven Legendre and Jake Dalton, Cal’s Glen Ishino and Kyle Bunthuwong, Illinois’ Paul Ruggeri and Michigan’s Chris Cameron and Mel Anton Santander. Each of these gymnasts have cracked the 89-point barrier this season, with the latter five exceeding 90 points. Just a guess here, but we think the eventual winner will be the one with a high score on pommel horse. In the event finals, the stiffest competition will be on floor, pommel horse and vault. All the action will take place April 15-17 at West Point.
