Arizona State won their 11th team title last weekend at the 2009 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. The Sun Devils won the collegiate (club) title, while William & Mary nailed down their 13th national title in the Varsity division (funded programs).
ASU’s Alex Gaudaur led the way with a first-place finish in the All-Around (81.35), while Riley Barclay (76.05) and Charles Baysinger captured 5th and 6th place, respectively.
Arizona State’s Division I program was unfairly eliminated in 1993 due to Title IX. It was immediately resurrected as an unfunded club program by Head Coach Scott Barclay. The program derives all of its funding through booster club memberships, donations, team fundraising events and corporate sponsorships.
The other competing club teams hailed from the University of Washington, who captured 2nd place, James Madison and SUNY-Brockport.
