Melton, Moldauer, Mikulak, Maestas and Modi are at the top of the Winter Cup Day 1 leaderboard. It’s far from over, but what a refreshing mix of veterans and relatively new faces we are seeing at the top of the pack. Sam Mikulak had a rough go of it on PB, but he slowly crept up in the standings to place 2nd. He also had four top 10 finishes, including the top score on PH (15.30). It was Mikulak’s first competition since the U.S. Championships, and was a giant first step on his road to a full recovery from an achilles injury. Sean Melton has struggled with some nagging injuries during the current NCAA season, but showed no signs of any weakness as he emerged as the Day 1 leader (87.75). He also had four top 10 finishes that included tying with Donnell Whittenberg for the day’s best SR score (15.40). Oklahoma freshman Yul Moldauer had his own string of four top 10 finishes and the top score on PB (15.25). CJ Maestas, the Illinois grad, emerged as a strong contender, compiling the second highest amount of points in the 20 Point Program (69), trailing only leader Melton (70). Maestas also had four top 10 scores that included three top 3 scores. Akash Modi had three top 10 scores, highlighted by tying for the best score on HB (15.05) with Mikulak. The anticipated battle of the three best NCAA all-arounders (Modi, Moldauer and Melton) most certainly did emerge as one of the top stories of this event.
Cameron Bock and Matt Wenske were the top finishing Juniors, and they both qualified to Day 2. They also earned a trip to compete at the P&G Senior meet in early June.
