2009 Men’s JO Nationals: Day One

Posted on 07 May 2009 by admin

The first 14 hours of competition are over for the Level 10s (all age groups).  There were three sessions, with the third session involving the regional team competition.  The top qualifiers advance to Saturday’s all-around finals and to Sunday’s individual event finals.  The JO Nationals is a qualifying mechanism for the VISA Championships and also determines the makeup of the level 9 Junior National Team.  Now for the results!

In the 14-15 division, World Cup’s John Orozco smoked the field with a season-high 91.15 in the AA.  Incredibly, he won five out of six events and finished second on rings.  Sam Mikulak from SCATS finished second in the AA (88.80) and won rings.  SCATS produced three of the top four finishers in the AA, and had four gymnasts in the top 20.  Kudos to Coach Grigor Chalikyan for preparing his men well for this meet.  SCATS had been ravaged by injuries all season.

Things were tight in the 16-18 division with three Oklahoma-bound gymnasts taking the top three AA spots.  Alex Naddour prevailed in the AA with an 89.35.  Fellow future OU teammates Chris Stehl (88.30) and Jake Dalton (88.05) rounded out the top three spots.
